• The grounds and gardens at The Calgary Zoo are cared for year round by a core staff of 10 people. Additional seasonal staff is hired to help with the work load during the spring and summer months.

Botanical Gardens

From the nearly six acres of lush plantings in the Dorothy Harvie Gardens to the carefully choreographed plantings in the animal habitats, the whole Zoo is really a garden. Native plants are highlighted in the Canadian Wilds, the Eurasian Marsh features species originating largely from Asia and Destination Africa focuses on plants native to that continent. Plant material is also selected to provide shelter, comfort, sustenance and amusement for our animals in their enclosures.

The Calgary Zoo recently did a direct mail appeal containing packages of seeds. To learn more about this initiative, please click here.
