TAKING THE PLUNGE
A POLAR PARADISE
As soon as the doors to Penguin Plunge open, an unforgettable polar experience begins with a blast of chilly air and an average indoor temperature of 7 degrees (45 F). Inside, visitors are surrounded by playful penguins perched on rocky outcroppings, plunging into chilly water, popping out of holes in the ice and walking with their trademark waddle. Naturalistic ice and rock formations combine with the flickering lights of the Aurora Australis to create the perfect setting for visitors to meet four species of penguins – Humboldt, Gentoo, Rockhopper and Kings.
QUALITY CARE
Providing the penguins with the highest quality of care is also a critical part of the complex. Dedicated water and air quality management systems will ensure the birds’ environmental requirements are met and food preparation space and off-exhibit areas will allow zookeepers and veterinarians to provide the birds with the best possible care.
EXTRA FEATURES
Penguin Plunge also includes a retail area, food outlet and public washrooms to meet the needs of the increasing number of visitors to the zoo.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The ultimate goal is to leave visitors with a love of penguins and the inspiration and knowledge to do what they can to help them. Interacting with the animals, showcasing their natural habitat and sharing the challenges penguins currently face are all part of the plan for the facility.
