Year of the Frog at the Calgary Zoo

During the next decade many amphibian species may go extinct in the wild, in many cases due to disease. By establishing 'insurance' populations of endangered amphibians in captivity, zoos can help prevent such extinctions from being final. Zoos also play an important role in educating visitors about amphibians and their conservation.

The Calgary Zoo's commitment to amphibian conservation started well before Year of the Frog, and we'll continue to increase our role in helping both Canadian and international amphibians well beyond 2008!

and in the FUTURE:

Increasing our amphibian expertise

The Calgary Zoo has been asked to take a leadership role in saving amphibian species from extinction, and we are building our skill set to take up the challenge! In partnership with CAZA, we are hosting a national amphibian husbandry workshop this May. Later in the year, our staff will be traveling to other facilities to learn more about amphibian breeding. Look out for new species arriving at the Calgary Zoo in the future!

New amphibian display at Cequel Energy Lodge

To keep our visitors informed about our progress and to highlight some of the local species of frogs and salamanders, we are planning a new amphibian display in the Cequel Energy Lodge of the Canadian Wilds. Keepers will be working on this display and plan to develop it later this year.
