THE VALUE OF YOUR ZOO

Calgarians value the zoo in their community, as we were awarded the favourite tourist attraction from both Calgary Herald Reader's Choice awards and Calgary's Child Magazine. Albertans connect with us. We were voted Alberta's 8th Most Loved Brand by consumers in an Ipsos-Reid study of Alberta-based brands, the only attraction on the top ten list.

We are proud to provide our community a place where visitors can learn about protecting the world around them while creating action and developing future conservationists. Educating through specially designed school programs, visitor learning opportunities and the Chevron Zoo School, we are making powerful connections by reciprocating the support we receive as valuable partner in the community.

CANADA LOVES US

Canadians engage with us as we received Trip Advisor’s Traveller’s
Choice Award – top zoo in Canada (Ranked number 1 in top 10 list by Trip Advisor users).

OUR IMPACT

We generate $79 million annually in economic impact and our long-term Master Plan will generate $363 million in economic impact.

OUR CONNECTION

One third of all Calgarians visit at least once per year and 67,000 Calgarians are zoo members.

ZOOSHARE CARES

More than 28,000 economically disadvantaged Calgarians visited the zoo in 2014 thanks to complimentary passes provided through the ZooShare program (More than 140,000 since 2010).

EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY

WE LOVE ANIMALS

We take pride in the animals in our care.
Our animal welfare protocols are the best in the world.
We are not simply content to meet existing animal welfare standards but we strive to set new standards.
We boldly took the step to relocate our elephants knowing that their animal welfare needs could be better met in a more suitable climate at another accredited zoo.
We have established the Calgary Zoo Welfare, Ethics and Research Committee with internal and external subject matter experts to ensure we are providing the best care possible.
We lead on the international stage for our safety standards as a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Safety Committee.
We are accountable and transparent at every level because we know that excellent animal welfare is our moral license to operate.

fun-facts

BY THE NUMBERS

The zoo is a complex eco-system all on it's own. We help to create immersive, educational and interactive experiences to help inspire our visitors to make real changes in their lives to help sustain wildlife and wild places. Our Animal Care department was a busy place in 2014.

Species In Our Care

our-home-two

OUR HOME

Developing a new space on the zoo grounds, whether it is a habitat, office space or maintenance area is a unique experience. Not only does our Facilities team have to take into account standard building practices but they have to be considerate to animal welfare needs, green practices and visitor experiences. Our habitats are complex life-support systems; each designed to meet the specific needs of each species in our care.

LIFECYCLE MAINTENANCE

We’re invested in upgrading your zoo – everything from creating a new habitat for our Komodo dragons to building a new greenhouse. In 2014 we completed a $7.5 million capital lifecycle maintenance program consisting of 121 projects.

ZOO INFRASTRUCTURE

All of the buildings and infrastructure damaged in the June 2013 flood have been rebuilt. In 2014 we spent $9.5 million in insurance funded expenditures to complete this work.

BREATHING NEW LIFE

The Prehistoric Park was upgraded to include new interpretive spaces, paving pathways and repainting the dinosaur models for Dinosaurs Alive in 2015.

ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT

Demonstrating our commitment to protecting the world we live in, two buildings on zoo grounds have received the prestigious LEED Gold Status certification.

INSPIRING HOPE

We are one of the most respected zoos in Canada for wildlife conservation and research.
The successful care of endangered species in captivity and in the wild is not easy or simple, but there is no alternative. There is hope and we are committed to making a difference.
