2016 was an incredible year – together we marked many conservation successes. As we set our sights on 2017, a look back at some of the highlights:
THEY’RE SO FLUFFY!
In the cutest news we’ve shared in the past few weeks, two male red panda cubs are now romping through their habitat. These adorable twins were born earlier this spring on June 21, 2016, and like most den animals, spent the first few months of their life bonding with their mom away from the public eye.
Congratulations are in order! Our Devonian Wildlife Conservation Center Supervisor, Rick Wenman, was awarded the prestigious 2016 Zoo and Aquarium Professional Award from Canadian Accredited Zoos and Aquariums.
We’re so excited- there’s a new king penguin in the family!
On June 16, 2016, king penguin Grace laid an egg. After last year’s success with hatching the zoo’s first ever king penguin chick, Nero, a new egg caused quite the stir. Our zookeepers watched and waited with anticipation as Grace guarded her egg, until her chick emerge on August 6.

A lot has happened recently at the Calgary Zoo- so it’s time for a gorilla update!
It’s been an eventful few months for our gorilla troop. We welcomed new life, with the first gorilla baby born in eight years, and said goodbye to a long-term leader, as silverback Kakinga passed away of age-related heart complications. Older female Zuri required an emergency surgery to treat a severe abdominal infection.
