Meet Jia Panpan, our male juvenile giant panda!

The Calgary Zoo has welcomed four giant pandas! Panda Passage will open officially to visitors on May 7, so it’s time you get to know our pandas.

Meet Jia Panpan.

The Calgary Zoo is pleased to welcome panda Jia Panpan to the zoo for the next two years as an ambassador for his species. Of the four giant pandas at the Calgary Zoo, he is the juvenile male, and will be staying at the zoo until 2019, when he and his sister Jia Yueyue will return to China.

Jia Panpan quick snack facts!

    • Young male
    • Name pronunciation is [jYA pahnpahn]
    • Name means “Canadian Hope”
    • He has a broad nose, and his eye patches are oval in shape
    • Jia Panpan is cautious, but can be cunning. His keepers notice that he often instigates play with his sister, Jia Yueyue

When giant panda cubs are born as twins in the wild, the female often will only care for one offspring. Luckily the Toronto Zoo’s Animal Care staff was on hand to help mother Er Shun when she gave birth to twins Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue in 2015. While Er Shun cared for one cub, the zookeepers would care for the second, scheduling swaps with the twins to ensure each cub received care and nourishment from its mother.

Keep an eye out for the way that Jia Panpan interacts with his mother! Even though the cubs would have already weaned from Er Shun in the wild at their age, she still shows them patience, and will engage them in play. They can be seen wrestling with mom and even stealing her food- when she lets them. Check out videos of Jia Panpan and his sister below!

These charming and elusive bears are the pride of China, where conservation efforts have helped to preserve the vulnerable species. The Calgary Zoo is working in collaboration with the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Szechuan, China; an internationally-recognized non-profit center focused on panda conservation research and breeding. As a valuable young male, Jia Panpan might become part of a future breeding arrangement when he returns to China.
