Calgary Zoo Leads the Way in Food Sustainability

We’re sourcing food as fresh as the taste! The Calgary Zoo continues to break ground in food sustainability practices with the recent recognition of two significant designations. Just this past month, the zoo became the first tourist attraction in Canada to be certified as Leaders in Environmentally Accountable Foodservice (LEAF), as well as 100% Ocean Wise.

If you’ve been to the zoo during the last year, you might have stopped into Grazers for a bite to eat. A new seasonal restaurant at the zoo, Grazers is a family friendly dining experience that emphasizes locally sourced ingredients.

By sourcing locally we are able to reduce our environmental footprint, a commitment that is important to the zoo as an organization, and to the staff. Sous Chef James Neilson said it best in an interview last year; “It’s important to me to continue to challenge myself and always try to raise the bar. I would also like to educate people on the importance of eating locally and sustainably, and the affect that it has on conservation.”

Did you know- we’re launching a new upscale restaurant? As part of the zoo’s restoration, we’re opening Grazers. This restaurant located right in the heart of the park (across from our Chilean flamingos) will feature locally grown products and healthy options all while giving guests incredible views of our gardens and animals.
