The 2019 Calgary White Hat Awards took place last week, celebrating those in the tourism industry who go above and beyond to make their guests’ experience memorable. The Calgary Zoo has a lot to celebrate – so much so that we needed a bus to transport the 46 semi-finalists to the award ceremony – and we are proud to announce that Calgary Zoo Interpreter Becky Dryden won in the category of Exceptional Service: Tour/Escort/Guide.
It comes as no surprise to members of her team that Becky was recognized last evening. From her creative programming and infectious enthusiasm to her supportive and kind personality, Becky sets the gold standard for genuine, engaging customer service and passion for the conservation work we do. During Becky’s four years with us, visitors often take the time to write us about her programs and their encounters with her. Just one example is the below note we received following a special visit by a young boy with hearing disabilities:
“Becky was just lovely. She organized a great variety of things to explore. He was a bit shy, but Becky was patient with him and he explored all the tactile items that she had collected. It was very touching that Becky had taken the time to learn a few signs before we got there. That was very thoughtful. With two children with significant hearing loss, their life is filled with appointments. So, it was a great pleasure to have such a special experience at the zoo.”
Becky’s work has a lasting impact, and she acknowledges its importance with a tremendous standard of professionalism and conviction. A child who feels a sense of awe and wondering after having every single one of his questions answered by an encouraging, smiling presence like Becky’s, is the same child who is learning to care for other species and our planet.
Congratulations, Becky! Thank you for your exceptional work creating memorable experiences for our visitors. We are incredibly lucky to have you as members of our zoo family.
