The summer of 2014, we recognized National Zoo Keeper Week! To celebrate the dedication and hard work of our amazing zookeepers, we posted an interview of a keeper each day that week! Check out Jeni below:
Meet the Zookeeper: Jeni Neufeld
Q: How did you become a zookeeper?
A: “I grew up on a game farm, went on to volunteer at a wildlife rehab, and became a zookeeper for Edmonton Valley Zoo. In order to become a zookeeper, I went to the University of Lethbridge for my Bachelor of Science in Biology.”
Q: When did you start working for the Calgary Zoo?
A: “I started working for the Calgary Zoo two and half years ago- February 2012 .”
Q: What’s your favourite animal to work with?
A: ” I have a big love for the hippos and the meerkats- the big and the small!”
Q: What’s a great zookeeping story that you can share with us?
A: “Overall, I would have to say the flood of 2013. Everyone at the zoo came together, and you saw your coworkers really working as a team. One of our keepers was working until 3 a.m. the first night of the flood, and she didn’t go home for days- and her own house was flooded! Everyone showed dedication and passion.”
