Waddle on Over for the 12th Annual Penguin Walk!

January 16, 2024 | 2 minute read

16 JANUARY 2024 (Calgary, AB) – It’s that time of year! Each January, the king penguins at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo take centre stage as they head out onto zoo grounds for the annual Penguin Walk, presented by WestJet!

Now in its 12th season, the royal waddle officially begins today, January 16, 2024*, and is planned to take place daily at 10:30 a.m. until mid-March*. The procession starts at Penguin Plunge, heads down to the Discovery Trail Bridge, and then loops back up to the penguin habitat over a 20-minute period.

The Penguin Walk is a great winter enrichment activity for the zoo’s king penguin colony, a species known to walk far distances to find open water in the wild. This is a free-choice activity for the birds, meaning they are given the option whether or not to participate – but luckily for royal onlookers, the colony loves to walk and usually chooses to!

“The Penguin Walk is just one of the many ways that we create enriching experiences for our resident king penguin colony during the winter months, while also connecting our visitors with the birds in a way that inspires a commitment to their well-being,” said Valerie Edwards, Zookeeper II. “We’re encouraged each year when the birds are excited to line up on opening day, showing us that they are looking forward to it as much as we are.”

Visitors can catch up to 14 king penguins participating in the daily walk, including Louis, Phillipe, Henri, Diana, Arthur, Solomon, Grace, Cleopatra, Napoleon, George, Boudicca, Rupert, Alfred, and Augustus – our youngest regal waddler who will make his ‘penguin walk debut’ this year (if he chooses)!

*The Penguin Walk is dependent on the birds’ desire to walk as well as the weather. If the temperature warms up to +5°C, drops to or below -25°C, or the winds are too excessive, the walk will be canceled. If the walk needs to be canceled, it will be communicated via the zoo’s website and social media channels. The earliest the walk will be canceled is 9:00 a.m. and the latest is 10:00 a.m.

Penguin Walk viewing is included with day admission or memberships. Visit for more information or tickets.
