A Mongolian wild horse (Przewalski's) foal was born at the Calgary Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Centre early morning Monday, May 1, 2017 - a sure sign of spring. The animal care staff believe it is a female, but will confirm after they complete their examinations.
The dam, Molly and the sire, Victor are both very protective and keeping a close eye on their foal. This is Molly's third foal born at the conservation centre, and Victor's first. Victor was first introduced to both Molly and female, Solstice, on December 15, 2015 for breeding purposes. We also expect Solstice to have a foal within the next couple weeks. Mongolian wild horses or Przewalski’s horses are an endangered species and part of an SSP, Species Survival Program.
