Supervision Policies and Chaperone Ratios

Teachers count as a chaperone.
Adult supervisors/chaperones must be 18 years or older.
Students under 12 years of age must be in supervised groups at all times.
You are provided a specific number of free chaperone tickets to ensure your school group has adequate supervision.  If groups exceed these guidelines, we reserve the right to charge full gate admission, and to limit the number of students and/or adults that enter the classroom, due to classroom limitations.
NO infants, toddlers, preschoolers or other siblings are permitted in the classroom. Any extra adults and children can enjoy the zoo, or relax with a coffee for the duration of the program and can meet their group after the classroom portion of their day.

The student/chaperone numbers are based on the Alberta Education guidelines as well as our classroom occupancy limits. They are in place for safety and to preserve the quality and integrity of our programming. You are only required to meet your school board required chaperone ratio, see below for the ratio we suggest:

Grade level

Maximum number of students*

Suggested ratio of adults to students

Max number of adults**

K – 3

4 – 6

7 - 12

* Maximum number of students per program, no exceptions. If you have a greater number of students you must purchase an additional program. Extra students will not be permitted into the program.
** For special needs students that require attendants/aides; the attendant/aide will receive complimentary admission by showing their Access2card or equivalent professional agency staff identification (staff ID or business card AND identification).

You are responsible for all student behavior while at the zoo. While our staff and docents will manage general behavior during programs, if students are persistently disruptive or disrespectful, your program may have aspects curtailed due to safety reasons. OR students/classes will be asked to leave.

What to bring?

Everything needed for the program will be supplied. Please ensure students are dressed for the weather. Layers are best, especially if there is a classroom component as well as a tour/outside component to the program.
