Designed to complement a novel study of The One and Only Ivan by K.A. Applegate, this thought-provoking program invites students to explore the complex historical relationship between humans and wild animals through the story of Ivan, a gorilla who spend decades living under human care. Through discussion, hands-on exploration, and observation of the gorillas in residence at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, students will examine topics like animal welfare, enrichment, conservation, and the responsibilities humans have when caring for wildlife. Along the way, students will explore how accredited zoos work to protect endangered species and discover how their own actions can help sustain wildlife and wild spaces. Curated for grades 4-6, this program encourages critical thinking, empathy, and meaningful discussion about our relationship with the natural world.
