Exploration Asia
The Exploration Asia Redevelopment project is officially underway! While there are some viewing impacts in the area, you can still visit many of your favourite species.
Due to significant construction activities in and around Exploration Asia, the zoo’s West Gate will remain closed for the 2025 season and is expected to remain closed until at least 2028/2029. This necessary step supports the safe movement of visitors while we undertake exciting improvements to animal habitats and visitor experiences.
Bite-Sized
Today, we are heartbroken to share the devasting news of the sudden passing of ‘Remi’, our beloved 3-month-old North American river otter pup.
Yesterday, while playing in the pool with her littermate, ‘Howe’, Remi did not resurface. A necropsy conducted by our Animal Health team confirmed that she sustained a life-ending cervical spinal cord injury during play. We believe her passing was swift and she did not suffer. While the test results confirm it was a tragic accident, they offer little comfort in a time of such deep sorrow.
The entire Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo family is mourning this loss. Saying goodbye to the animals we love and care for is never easy—especially when the loss is sudden and to one so young. Though her time with us was brief, Remi left a lasting impression. She will be remembered for her playful, curious nature, her tender moments with her mom ‘Kate’ and littermate Howe, and the joy she brought to all who had visited her. She will be deeply missed by all.
We all grieve in our own way, and we kindly ask that you please respect the privacy of our staff while on zoo grounds. Please keep our Animal Care, Health & Welfare team in your thoughts as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. We are leaning on one another as we mourn this heartbreaking loss and honour the short but meaningful life of a truly special little otter.
