Meet Our African Lions

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo's African lion pride has grown by two - lionesses Mali and Sabi are now visible to the public!

After acclimating to their new home, the lionesses will be introduced to our male lions Baruti and Aslan. Lion introductions are a complex process. We are fortunate to have an exceptional Animal Care team with substantial experience, both here and with other institutions, introducing big cats safely and successfully. Progressing through the comprehensive introduction plan they have created is a matter of the behaviours we’ll see and not a timeline. There may be times when the lions may be absent from display to facilitate this process. We fully appreciate your respect and understanding during these sensitive introductions.

African lions are large, powerfully built cats that are second in size only to the tiger. Lions are most active at night and live in a variety of habitats but prefer grassland, savannah, dense scrub, and open woodland. Come catch a glimpse of our lions: Aslan, Baruti, Mali and Sabi.

How you can help

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo—along with other accredited zoos across North America—participates in Species Survival Plans (SSP). Your donations and membership costs can go a long way in helping us fund these conservation efforts.
