Exploration Asia
The Exploration Asia Redevelopment project is officially underway! While there are some viewing impacts in the area, you can still visit many of your favourite species.
Due to significant construction activities in and around Exploration Asia, the zoo’s West Gate will remain closed for the 2025 season and is expected to remain closed until at least 2028/2029. This necessary step supports the safe movement of visitors while we undertake exciting improvements to animal habitats and visitor experiences.
Bite-Sized
Who is black and white and cute all over? Our incoming female Malayan tapir ‘Sempurna’!
You read that right – we are thrilled to be adding a female tapir to our zoo family! Sempurna (pronounced sem-PURN-uh) is three years old and joined us from Woodland Park Zoo on a Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation for our current resident male tapir, 22-year-old ‘Tanuck’. Only time will tell if these two will make a successful breeding pair, but we have our fingers crossed that they may one day contribute to the growth of their Endangered species under human care.
Sempurna is currently completing her quarantine at our offsite Archibald Biodiversity Centre so she won’t be joining us on zoo grounds just yet. Stay tuned for the news of when she will be making her public debut!
