Zooventure Experience

What can I expect to see on the outdoor Zooventure Experience?

Hike up through the Rockies to find big horn sheep, caribou, otters, grizzlies, cougars, moose and many more animals who call Canada home. Safari through the Savannah to see hippos, giraffes, zebras, lions and lemurs roaming. Trek to the heart of Africa as you visit the gorillas. Meander through the tranquility and serenity of the ornamental Dorothy Harvie Gardens. Venture East to see the playful antics of the Japanese macaques and red pandas. Be sure not to miss the majestic Amur tigers and snow leopards while you're there. Then head back in time through Prehistoric Park. Thank you for your patience as the animals get used to their new routines!

Safety Comes First!

As part of our commitment to putting animal, employee and visitor safety first with Alberta Health Services, the zoo will feel a little different than your last visit.

Tickets and Important Health & Safety Information:

Online timed tickets are required before you visit. Tickets will not be sold onsite.

These will be available online for members and the public from May 21 on a first come first served basis. 

You do not require a timed ticket if:

  • You're a child under 3

  • You're a Frontline Essential Worker who received a ticket from us from your employer 

  •  You pre-purchased hotel tickets

Members: See the drop down below for directions on how to reserve your timed entry tickets.

Airmiles ticket holders, AMA members, and other pre-purchased, discount or complimentary ticket holders: Please see the drop down below for directions. 

You are not to enter the Calgary Zoo if:

  • You're ill or experiencing symptoms of COVID -19. These include: fever, cough, shortness of breath, runny nose, sore throat, and/or others listed on Alberta Health Services website.

  • You've been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with or has symptoms of COVID-19.

  • You or someone in your household has traveled internationally in the past 14 days.

You will be asked to follow all Alberta Health Services Guidelines on Calgary Zoo grounds:

  • Practice physical distancing: keep 3 meters between your household and others

  • Wash hands often for at least 20 seconds

  • Masks are recommended for ages 2+, but not mandatory. Be sure to put them on and remove them safely.

Experiences & Amenities on Park:

  • You’ll have an exclusive feeling as you visit, with reduced capacity and timed ticket entry in place. Access to the zoo will only be available through the North Entrance. The West Entrance will be closed.

  • Certain animal habitats will have adjusted viewing in place to keep all the animals safe.

  • Physical distancing will be supported with directional paw prints safely distances 3 metres apart throughout the park to keep households safely apart from each other.

  • Physical distancing will be in place in animal viewing areas.

  • Washrooms will be open, with increased cleaning protocols in place.

  • Wagon, wheelchair, and power chair rentals are available. See the dropdown section below for more information.

  • Food & beverage (including Kitamba, Dairy Bar, and Tusk & Grill), and outdoor picnic seating is available. Limited capacity indoor seating and retail gift shop items will be available at Kitamba. See the dropdown section below for current hours of operation.

  • The Zoo Crew will be regularly spraying and sanitizing high-touch areas.

  • Extra hand sanitizer stations will be in place throughout the park.

  • Security, First Aid and limited Lost & Found services are open. See the dropdown section below for more information on Lost & Found services.

The following will be unavailable until further notice as we support a safe experience for all:

  • Water fountains

  • Carousel

  • Playgrounds

  • Daily Programs (such as, Animal Snackers, Nature Hackers, and Animal Training)

  • Indoor habitats

  • Indoor facilities, including: Grazers; Discovery Centre; ENMAX Conservatory; and, Gift Shops.

  • How do members pre-book reserved time slots for Zooventure?
    • Members must arrive at a pre-booked reserved time slot to ensure capacity is not exceeded. Members will be able to reserve a timed ticket online in advance of arrival by logging into your membership account. Children under 3 will not need to reserve an online timed ticket.
    • Member Only Hour will take place daily from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The final time slot for entry daily is 5:30-6 p.m., and no entry will be allowed after this time.
    • General admission online tickets and membership reservations are limited each day.
    • Members may reserve a time slot for themselves and up to as many guests allotted with their membership level.
    • Members will be able to add paid tickets to their reservation slot for non-members joining their visit.
    • Members will need their photo ID, membership card and reservation confirmation (printed or on phone) to check in.

  • Do children under 3 years of age also need a ticket?

    No, children under 3 do not need a timed ticket.

  • Can I purchase tickets at the North gate?

    There is no onsite ticket purchasing permitted.

  • What do I do if I already have a non-timed ticket or need to access as discount?

    Hotel ticket holders and Frontline Essential Workers who received a ticket through their employer do not require an advance timed ticket; please follow the signage directions on your arrival at our North Gate.

    All other ticket holders and discount options must bring your ticket, voucher or discount card with you on the date of your visit and approach a Guest Relations Representative at Alberta Plaza for support, including: 

    • Complimentary ticket holders
    • Airmiles ticket holders
    • AMA members
    • Calgary Attractions coupon holders
    • Calgary Recreation Fee Assistance Program/Zooshare
    • Individuals/Groups who bought advance tickets

  • Can I park and enter at the West gate?

    No. The West gate will remain closed.

  • Will I have to wait to get inside the Calgary Zoo?

    The Calgary Zoo will limit any unnecessary contact or crowding by capping guest admissions daily. Online timed tickets are required before you visit. Tickets will not be sold onsite. There is also helpful physical distancing decals and one-way pathways throughout the zoo.

  • Is food available for purchase?

    Food & beverage (including Kitamba, Dairy Bar, and Tusk & Grill), and outdoor picnic seating is available. Limited capacity indoor seating and retail gift shop items will be available at Kitamba.

    Water fountains are closed throughout the zoo but vending machines are available outside.

  • What should I bring with me?
    • Mask– Guests are encouraged to wear masks over the age of 2 years old, but this is not mandatory.

    • Water - Vending and bottled water is available for purchase, but water fountains will be closed.

    • Sunscreen – No indoors spaces are available for access, with the exception of limited seating at Kitamba.

    • Stroller (if you need one) – Wagon rentals will not be available.

    • Comfortable shoes.

  • When can we redeem our gift cards for memberships?

    Thank you for your support of the Calgary Zoo! You can use your gift cards for online purchases, including memberships and tickets.

  • Can I leave the zoo and come back in?

    Due to our time ticketing system, visitors will be required to leave the zoo immediately after visitation to eliminate congestion on the property or in the parking lot. Once you exit the zoo, you can not re-enter the same day without a new timed ticket.

  • Can I use cash for food purchases?

    Major credit cards and debit will be the only forms of payment that will be accepted at retail kiosks. Cash is permitted to be used at the vending machines.

  • What if I buy a ticket and discover I'm unable to attend at the date/time I selected?

  • Is the Lost & Found operational?

    Due to current health and safety measures, Lost & Found services are only available for certain items , including: electronics, wallets, bank cards and credit cards. Unfortunately, we are not be able to offer Lost & Found services for cloth items at this time. Thank you for your understanding. 

  • What are the operating hours for food and beverage services?

    The operating hours for food and beverage services are as follows:

    • Kitamba + Java = 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
    • Tusk & Grill = 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (weather permitting)
    • Diary Bar = 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (weather permitting)
  • Are wagon, wheelchair and/or powerchair rentals available?

    Yes, as follows:

    • Wagon Rentals

      Wagon rentals are available at are the North Gift Shop, located by Penguin Pluge, for a rental fee of $10. Keep your receipt and return your wagon before 5:00 p.m. to get $2 back. Wagons are proudly sponsored by Servus Credit Union.

    • Wheelchair and Power Chair Rentals

      Wheelchairs are available at the North Gift Shop for a rental fee of $20. This cost includes a $10 refundable deposit and GST. A limited number of power chairs are also available, for a rental fee of $25.

    Please note that all rental equipment has a limited supply and will be rented out on a first come first served basis. Reservations are not taken, nor is there a waiting list available throughout the day.
