Calgary, AB – The Calgary Zoo is excited to announce the debut of its third king penguin chick hatched on August 1, 2017. The chick is growing steadily under the attentive care of its parents Diana and Arthur. At this point, the sex of the chick is unknown.
“This new addition has been very positive for the dynamics of the king penguin colony,” says Dr. Malu Celli, Curator, Calgary Zoo. “Anytime a chick successfully hatches is a celebration as it adds one more individual for this at-risk species.”
The chick is the second offspring of Diana and Arthur and a sibling to Nero, who just celebrated his second birthday on Tuesday. Both have been sharing the parental duties as penguins do and are rearing the chick with great success.
King Penguins are part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) which is an organized network that matches individuals of a species to ensure genetic diversity within the population and safeguards against the extinction of the species. Currently, king penguins face many threats in the wild such as a warming of the seas and habitat loss.
