PETRONAS Gateway to Asia Malayan Tapir Viewing: ‘Sempurna’ and her female calf ‘Nyawa’ have daily access to either the main indoor habitat or the outdoor habitat from 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. They’ll also have access to their behind-the-scenes space and may choose to spend time there, so viewing isn’t always guaranteed. Thank you for your understanding.
Due to significant construction activities in and around Imagine Asia, the zoo’s West Gate will remain closed for the 2025 season and is expected to remain closed until at least 2028/2029. This necessary step supports the safe movement of visitors while we undertake exciting improvements to animal habitats and visitor experiences.
Bite-Sized
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Fabio, a beloved member of our peafowl muster.
Earlier this month, Fabio, a 15-year-old free-roaming peacock, was struck on a back service road by a third-party contractor vehicle following scheduled work. Sadly, Fabio died from his injuries. Our Animal Health team performed a necropsy, which confirmed that Fabio quickly succumbed to his injuries. While we are deeply saddened by his loss, it is some comfort to know that he did not suffer.
We take the safety and wellbeing of our animals very seriously. Our Environment, Health & Safety team conducted a thorough investigation, including a review of available security footage. The incident was determined to be a tragic and unavoidable accident.
We are reinforcing awareness of free-roaming animals across our grounds, including strengthening contractor safety processes and reinforcing expectations for staff and contractors operating vehicles in areas where animals may be present.
The opportunity to experience wildlife up close is one of the special things about visiting the zoo, and it is a privilege we do not take lightly. Free-roaming peafowl have been part of our zoo family dating back to the 1930s, and we have continuously cared for blue peafowl since 1966. Fabio was part of that long history. He hatched here at the zoo in June 2011 and spent his entire life with us.
We are grateful to everyone who helped care for Fabio throughout his life, and to the many guests who enjoyed seeing him during their visits. He was a special part of our zoo family and will be missed.
