Calgary Zoo and Nutrien partner to promote conservation and grow sustainably

Posted on April 07

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Zoo and Nutrien announced earlier today that they have partnered to promote conservation and environmental protection through the Sustainable Browse Program.

Nutrien’s sponsorship of the zoo’s Sustainable Browse Program includes a $100,000 investment over a five-year period dedicated to the sustainable growing and storage of food for the many creatures who call the Calgary Zoo home. In line with Nutrien’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture practices, the company’s support will enable the Calgary Zoo to source plants from local growers for food and enrichment for the animals we love and care for.

The Calgary Zoo strives to be an industry leader in sustainable operations, and we think this philosophy should also apply to how we source food for our animals.

“By sourcing food from local growers, we are able to keep dollars in the pockets of local farmers and families, and do our part to protect the environment for generations to come,” said Calgary Zoo President and CEO, Dr. Clément Lanthier. “Thanks to the support of Nutrien, we are able to continue living our values and providing world-class care to our animals.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Calgary Zoo to support sustainable food production in our local community,” says Trina Aburto, Senior Advisor, Community Relations & Investment at Nutrien. “To continue to feed a growing world, we need to encourage the implementation of sustainable practices at all levels – including the community partners that we support. The zoo’s commitment to environmental stewardship aligns well with our Sustainability Strategy and we’re excited to watch this program grow over the coming years.”

The next time you visit the Calgary Zoo, you will know the willow our moose are munching on is part of a larger effort to create sustainable ecosystems for everyone. Sustainable Browse Program Information: The Sustainable Browse Program, supported by Nutrien, ensures animals like moose, caribou, and giraffe receive food similar to what they would eat in the wild. This program also gives the zoo the opportunity to provide natural enrichment to species like gorillas who can use browse for tools. This program also allows the zoo to bin and freeze leafy browse collected in the summer, so we are able to supplement our animal’s winter diet with silage maintaining a vital piece of our animal welfare program through Alberta’s deep freeze from November to March. Nutrien’s support ensures this program is sustained, and will help the Calgary Zoo increase the number of species who have access to the program and the type of plants we are able to collect.
