Grieving ‘Akio’
We're heartbroken to share that last month, we made the compassionate decision to euthanize our 15-year-old male gentoo penguin ‘Akio’, following a rapid decline in his health. In 2013, Akio showed clinical…

Exploration Asia
The Exploration Asia Redevelopment project is officially underway! While there are some viewing impacts in the area, you can still visit many of your favourite species.
Due to significant construction activities in and around Exploration Asia, the zoo’s West Gate will remain closed for the 2025 season and is expected to remain closed until at least 2028/2029. This necessary step supports the safe movement of visitors while we undertake exciting improvements to animal habitats and visitor experiences.
Bite-Sized
On July 25, our ACHW team made the compassionate decision to euthanize ‘Kwanza’, our 11-year-old slender-tailed meerkat who had already surpassed the 10.1-year median life expectancy for the species.
Necropsy findings confirmed progression of her chronic diseases including significant heart disease and severe arthritis, both of which she was on treatment for. She remained in excellent body condition until her final day—a testament to the exceptional care she received.
Kwanza joined us from Zoo de Granby in 2023 and quickly became a favourite among staff, volunteers, and guests. She will be remembered fondly for her spirited nature and the joy she brought to those who cared for her.
