Sad news in Exploration Asia

We are heartbroken to share that our four-year old male Japanese macaque “Kyubi” has passed away, in spite of heroic efforts made by his human caregivers and our veterinary team to assist him with recovery, after he sustained traumatic injuries during introduction activities with his habitat mates.

Kyubi joined the Calgary Zoo family this past Spring. Our Animal Care, Health & Welfare team used their decades of experience in animal introductions to create a safe and slow introduction plan over the past six-months for Kyubi to meet the female troop members: Lorie, Loki, Mika, Shawna, Suki and Sachi.

While rare, introduction fatalities happen both in animals under human care and in the wild. Our Animal Care, Health & Welfare team is devastated by this outcome. Please keep the Calgary Zoo Animal Care, Health & Welfare team, and the Granby Zoo team that raised Kyubi, in your thoughts as they mourn this good natured macaque.
