Sharing the Love on Valentine's Day

Posted on February 13

The Calgary Zoo is getting the warm fuzzies this Valentine’s Day by celebrating with roses and all things pink and red. On Thursday, February 14, 2019, special Valentine’s will be delivered to some of the zoo’s animals to mark the loveliest day of the year.

“On a day like Valentine’s, we like to spice up the regular enrichment we provide our animals with something a bit more fun,” says Colleen Baird, General Curator, Calgary Zoo. “Introducing different enrichment items, like rose petals, encourages natural behaviours and offer the animals new stimulation and variation.”

Receiving Valentine’s treats will be the giant pandas, king penguins, North American river otters and western lowland gorillas. As a leader in the science of animal welfare, enrichment is a vital component of the daily care the Calgary Zoo provides to its animals.
