Bite-Sized
It is with heavy hearts that we share that this week we said goodbye to our 31-year-old Chilean flamingo, ‘Pedro’.
Pedro hatched here in 1993 and was a cherished member of our flamboyance for over three decades. While the median life expectancy for male Chilean flamingos in human care is 34 years, Pedro was considered a senior and had been living with age-related health challenges since 2019 when he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and soon after developed osteoarthritis.
Thanks to the expert and compassionate care of our Animal Care, Health & Welfare team, his condition was well-managed for several years. Recently, however, his mobility became more difficult despite ongoing treatment and support. After careful consideration of his overall comfort and quality of life, our Animal Care, Health & Welfare team made the compassionate decision that euthanasia was the best decision for his overall welfare.
Pedro was well-loved by our team and by those who visited him over the years. Please keep his care team in your thoughts during this difficult time.
