15 JANUARY 2026 (Calgary, AB) – The spotlight is on the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s king penguins as they waddle across zoo grounds and into hearts for the 14th annual Penguin Walk, presented by WestJet Cargo.
The royal procession officially began on Sunday, January 11, 2026, taking place daily at 10:30 a.m., through mid-March (weather permitting). The 20-minute walk starts at Penguin Plunge, travels to the Discovery Trail Bridge, and loops back to the penguin habitat, offering guests a rare opportunity to witness the king penguins up close.
“There’s something really special about watching the penguins choose to step out and explore,” said Patrick Thompson, Animal Care Manager (South America, Rainforest, Penguins). “The Penguin Walk gives guests the chance to see the birds up close and experience their personalities in action. It’s a great way to see the trust and curiosity the penguins show as they move through their environment with the people who care for them daily.”
This beloved winter tradition is more than just a crowd-pleaser — it’s also a fantastic enrichment activity for the zoo’s king penguin colony. In the wild, these birds are known to walk great distances to reach open water, so the daily strolls here mimic their natural behaviour. Participation is completely voluntary; the penguins decide whether they want to join the walk. Luckily for guests, the colony usually loves their daily outings, with nearly all of the birds choosing to waddle along.
“As a proud Calgary-based partner, WestJet Cargo has provided ongoing support to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, earning trust to transport remarkable wildlife including a tiger, polar bears, and even penguins,” said Wayne Davidson, Head of Sales at WestJet Cargo. “We go the extra mile to ensure every journey is handled with safety, precision, and care.”
Guests can catch up to 13 king penguins participating in the daily walk, including Alfred, Arthur, Augustus, Boudicca, Cleopatra, Diana, George, Grace, Henri, Napoleon, Philippe, Rupert, and Solomon.
Weather and Schedule Notes: The Penguin Walk depends on both the birds’ participation and the weather conditions. If temperatures reach +5°C or higher, drop to -25°C or below, or if winds are too strong, the walk will be canceled. Cancellation notifications will be posted on the zoo’s website and social media channels by 9 a.m., or by 10 a.m. at the latest.
