Slender-tailed meerkat

Bite-Sized

Farewell to ‘Karoo’

On December 19, 2025, we said goodbye to our 14-year-old male slender-tailed meerkat ‘Karoo’ who had already surpassed the 10.1-year median life expectancy for the species.

ACHW had been treating Karoo for progressive arthritic changes in his elbows, knees and spine. Unfortunately, he was no longer responding to medical interventions. Additional age-related medical issues of decreased vision and early heart disease led the ACHW team to make the difficult but compassionate decision to euthanize him.

Karoo joined our zoo family in 2012, along with his brother ‘Kwando’, and was a beloved member of the African Savannah.
