PETRONAS Gateway to Asia Malayan Tapir Viewing: ‘Sempurna’ and her female calf ‘Nyawa’ have daily access to either the main indoor habitat or the outdoor habitat from 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. They’ll also have access to their behind-the-scenes space and may choose to spend time there, so viewing isn’t always guaranteed. Due to significant construction activities in and around Imagine Asia, the zoo’s West Gate will remain closed for the 2025 season and is expected to remain closed until at least 2028/2029. Who’s black-and-white and new at the zoo? Our male Hartmann’s mountain zebra!
You read that right! Meet Scooby, a 10-year-old zebra who is joining our dazzle from Hogle Zoo as part of a breeding recommendation with the Species Survival Plan (SSP). Hartmann’s mountain zebras are listed by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation, and we’re keeping our hooves crossed for more members of our dazzle to safeguard the genetic diversity of this species under human care. Scooby has been matched with females Genna and Otavi, which means we’re bidding a bittersweet farewell to females Leba and Moco who have moved to the Archibald Biodiversity Centre (ABC) as part of this transition.
Scooby has completed his quarantine offsite at the ABC but he spent his first day here in the Savannah Crossing getting settled in. After showing off his interest in smelling the females with the Flehmen response, introductions began this morning in Savannah Plains, and we’re thrilled that they are going well!
During the early days, Scooby may not always be viewable but be sure to stop by the dayroom in Savannah Crossing to see if he’s there. Join us in welcoming him in the comments!
