Did you hear the news on the horn? We have a new male Von der Decken’s hornbill!
Meet Eddy, who just had his first hatchday on June 22nd. His name is inspired by Eddara euchroma, an insect species native to southeastern Africa that wild Von der Decken’s hornbills eat. Unlike our female hornbill Acacia, who has a black bill, males of this species have red bills with cream tips and black edges. We’re hopeful that these two birds of a feather start a flock together as breeding partners.
Eddy was hatched at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, and our friends at WestJet Cargo helped transport him to his new zoo home through a new direct flight from Detroit to Calgary. Thank you to our dedicated Zoological Records & Animal Relocations (ZRAR) team and WestJet Cargo for helping transport Eddy safely to his new home!
