Exploration Asia
The Exploration Asia Redevelopment project is officially underway! While there are some viewing impacts in the area, you can still visit many of your favourite species.
Due to significant construction activities in and around Exploration Asia, the zoo’s West Gate will remain closed for the 2025 season and is expected to remain closed until at least 2028/2029. This necessary step supports the safe movement of visitors while we undertake exciting improvements to animal habitats and visitor experiences.
Bite-Sized
It’s with heavy hearts that we share the passing of 30-year-old female Chilean flamingo, ‘Ica’.
Ica had been receiving treatment for ongoing changes to her left leg and right foot. Despite an integrative, multimodal approach including medications, laser therapy, supportive bandaging, and more, the progression of conditions in both her legs made it increasingly difficult for Ica to stand comfortably and walk confidently. With her declining quality of life in mind, the Animal Care, Health & Welfare team made the difficult but compassionate decision to euthanize her on November 30, 2023.
Ica hatched here at the zoo in 1993 and was a beloved member of the flamboyance during her long life. She will be missed by her fellow flamingos and by those who have loved and cared for her during her time with us. Please keep her team in your thoughts during this difficult time.
