Exploration Asia
The Exploration Asia Redevelopment project is officially underway! While there are some viewing impacts in the area, you can still visit many of your favourite species.
Due to significant construction activities in and around Exploration Asia, the zoo’s West Gate will remain closed for the 2025 season and is expected to remain closed until at least 2028/2029. This necessary step supports the safe movement of visitors while we undertake exciting improvements to animal habitats and visitor experiences.
Bite-Sized
We’re turning red with excitement – join us in welcoming a NEW species to zoo grounds!
A female red-crowned crane named ‘Ruby’ joined the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo family last week. Her habitat can be found at the back courtyard habitat of Gateway to Asia. We can’t wait to celebrate her 20th birthday later this month!
Did you know that the red-crowned crane is one of the largest crane species in the world? They can stand up to five feet tall and have a wingspan of two and a half metres!
Red-crowned cranes are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is estimated that there are ~3,000 left in the wild. As an ambassador for her species, we’re thrilled to welcome this magnificent bird to her new home.
