Bite-Sized
We are saddened to share that our 35-year-old Chilean flamingo, ‘Carlos’, passed away over the weekend.
Carlos joined us in 1989 and lived a remarkably long life—surpassing the median life expectancy for male Chilian flamingos in human care, which is 34 years.
Though he had shown no prior signs of illness, he was found unable to stand in his habitat. Despite immediate medical attention and supportive care, he peacefully passed away later that evening. A postmortem examination revealed the cause was inoperable gastrointestinal tract cancer.
Carlos was dearly loved by our staff, volunteers, and visitors alike. It was a privilege to care for him for more than three decades. Please keep his dedicated care team in your thoughts during this time.
