Trek down steamy tropical rainforest pathways alive with lush plants and singing, colourful birds. Along the way, you’ll see gorillas, colobus monkeys and mandrills in their family groups. But don’t let the cute primates distract you – keep a watchful eye out for snakes and crocodiles too. Then, wander over to the savannah to see hippos underwater in their huge pool, giraffes and zebras grazing in the distance and lions snoozing in the sunshine.

Rainforests and Savannahs

Africa is a land of extremes. Humid rainforests are home to an incredible diversity of life – thousands plant species come together to create an environment where mammals, birds, insects and amphibians thrive. In the hot, arid grasslands of the savannah, trees are sparse and the hot season never seems to end.

Leap Through Lemur Habitat

The new Land of Lemurs habitat, slated to open next July, will have visitors leaping for joy. Zoo guests will discover an incredible walk-through experience, bringing them a one-of-a-kind view of several species of lemur. This new building will also highlight the plight facing lemurs, the zoo’s conservation projects in Madagascar, and the promotion of simple actions that people can take to help protect wildlife.

TransAlta Rainforest

Immerse yourself in the steamy atmosphere of this unique ecosystem. Let the sights, sounds and smells of the TransAlta Rainforest transport you to Africa where you’ll see a myriad of incredible jungle plants and animals.

Safari Through the African Savannah

As you circle around the African Savannah’s huge baobab tree, you’ll find prickly porcupines, busy meerkats, snakes, tall giraffes and swimming hippos. In the summer, the building’s airplane-hangar doors open, connecting the building to the outdoor exhibits – savannah style – with zebras, giraffes and ostriches all roaming together.

Family Fun for the Little Ones

Climb like monkey, wiggle like a caterpillar and slide down a giant snake at the Calgary Zoo’s Kinsmen Zooventure Playground. Separate play areas for wee ones, toddlers and big kids are loaded with opportunities to get creative – and burn off extra energy at the same time.

Saving Hippos – Changing Lives

It was a simple concept – create a sanctuary to save hippos – and over a decade ago, the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary was founded to do just that.
